Latin America: Finished Steel Imports from China Increased 41% During the Jan-Feb 2015 Period

The rising imports from China continue to affect the region.
During the first two months of 2015, China exported to the world 16.4 million tons of finished steel, growing 17 points higher (58%)
Of that total, 1.7 million tons came to Latin America, an increase of 41% versus Jan-Feb 2014.
Alacero - Santiago, Chile, April 01st, 2015. In the first two months of 2015, finished steel exports from China to Latin America reached 1.7 million tons, an increase of 41% compared to the 1.2 million tons registered in the same period of 2014.
Total Chinese finished steel exports to the world continue to grow and reached 16.4 million tons in Jan-Feb 2015, 58% more than the same months of 2014.
The share of Latin America´s in total exports from China was 10.4% in 2015, a decrease of 1 percentage point from Jan-Feb 2014 (11.4%). The region was only surpassed as destination by South Korea that received 2.1 million tons (a 13% of the total) in that period. Vietnam, third destination, received 1.4 million tons (9% of total).
In February 2015, Latin America received 625,000 tons of finished steel from China, a decrease of 42% compared to January 2015 (1.1 million tons), but an increase of 6% compared to February 2014 (588,000 tons). This decline between February and January 2015 is explained by the festivities of the lunar year in that country.
Chinese finished steel imports by destination
The main Latin American destinations for finished steel in the two first months of 2015, were Brasil (that received 271 thousand tons, 16% of the regional flow); México (248 thousand tons, 15%) and Central America (243 thousand tons, 14%).
During the first two months of the year, the countries that proportionally grew Chinese finished steel imports most y-o-y was: Argentina (increased +792%), Cuba (+269), Mexico (+163%), Venezuela (+146) and Dominican Republic (+143%). However, Cuba maintains its low import volumes.
Mexico continues to experience a steady increase in finished steel import volumes, consolidating as the second destination in Latin America, surpassing Central America (248 thousand tons) and Chile (230 thousand tons).Imports from China by products
Flat Steel represented 58% of the finished steel imported from China to Latin America during Jan-Feb 2015, reaching 991 thousand tons. According to the imported volume, the most important were:
> Sheets and coils of other alloy Steel (409 thousand tons, 41% of flat Steel imports)
> Hot rolled galvanized steel (200 thousand tons, 20%).
> Cold rolled coils (152 thousand tons, 15%).
Long Steel exported by China in Jan-Feb 2015 reached 613 thousand tons, concentrated in:
> Rod Wire (251 thousand tons, 41% of long steel)
> Bars (243 thousand tons, 40%)
